Metadata calculator

Not just “what is in there” but “how much does it take, how risky is it, and how much would cleaning save”. Useful when you have to report to a client, or decide whether a batch is worth cleaning.

JPG / PNG / WebP / AVIF / HEIC · one file at a time · 15 MB max
One file at a time: per-category byte accounting needs a full parse. For batches use the cleaner's results table.

What the four numbers mean

MetricMeaningHow to use it
Total metadataSum of every removable block, in bytesOver 5% means the file is carrying a lot
Share by categoryHow much C2PA / XMP / EXIF / PNG text / IPTC each takeFind the dominant cause and decide which switches to turn off
Upload risk scoreWeighted by platform reading priority, not by sizeA high score means several triggers stacked up
Post-clean estimateFile size minus removable bytesAn estimate only; the real value depends on the rebuilt structure

How the risk score is calculated

Platforms do not rank an AI label by bytes, they rank it by block type. So the weights here are per type as well: C2PA is highest (most platforms read it first), XMP and PNG text chunks next, IPTC and EXIF Software after that, and pure camera EXIF or GPS only affects privacy, barely touching the AI decision.

  • HIGH — C2PA content credentials, AI tags in XMP, IPTC AI attribution. These three drive Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest and TikTok.
  • MEDIUM — an EXIF Software field naming an AI tool, or PNG text chunks carrying workflow data. Indirect, but readable.
  • LOW — the remaining camera EXIF (time, GPS, lens). A privacy matter, generally not an AI trigger.

Typical metadata sizes

Knowing the usual values helps spot a file that is unusually heavy:

SourceTypical metadataMostly made of
Straight from a phone camera5–15 KBEXIF camera parameters
Midjourney PNG10–50 KBXMP parameters plus PNG text chunks
DALL·E / ChatGPT5–20 KBC2PA signature
Photoshop (with AI edits)15–60 KBC2PA plus XMP
Stable Diffusion / ComfyUI20–100 KB+The full workflow in PNG text chunks

Why the size itself matters

Metadata can add more than 10% to a file. For a creator uploading dozens of images it directly affects upload time and storage; for portfolio sites and email attachments it eats bandwidth and size limits. Version management is worse still — two JPEGs that look identical may differ by tens of KB because one kept IPTC keywords and C2PA assertions.

So the recommendation is simple: clean before distributing, keep a master copy locally with the full metadata. Use the master when you need provenance, use the cleaned copy when you upload.

Common questions

Does calculating modify the file?
No. It is purely read-only. Only the cleaner writes a new file.
Why does the post-clean estimate differ from the actual download?
Rebuilding the structure adds some alignment bytes, so the real reduction is usually slightly smaller than the estimate — typically by tens to hundreds of bytes.
Does a high score guarantee the platform will label it AI?
No. The score only reflects how many readable triggers exist in the file. Whether a platform labels it also depends on its own policy, your account history and pixel-level signals.
Can it calculate a whole batch?
This page does a deep analysis of one file. For batches use the cleaner, whose results table gives before and after size for every file.
Why does GPS count towards the score?
Because it is a genuine upload risk, just not on the AI-label chain. It carries a low weight so it is not confused with an AI trigger.
