AI labels on Threads: what Meta reads and how to clear it
Threads belongs to the Meta family and its logic is close to Instagram's: it reads C2PA and XMP from the file, and labels a hit.

Meta system, with decision logic close to Instagram
The same image in different slots — feed, story, cover — may be three separate files, and each one has to be handled.
What the platform reads
| Entry point | Notes |
|---|---|
| Post image | Reads C2PA and XMP |
| Carousel | Each frame judged independently |
| Video | Container tags plus the cover image |
Pre-upload checklist
- 11. Clean C2PA and XMP
- 22. Handle every carousel frame
- 33. Handle the video and its cover separately
- 44. Upload that copy, with no editor or forwarding in between
Common traps
- Cleaning only one carousel frame
- Forgetting the video cover
If it is still flagged after cleaning
That means the trigger was never in the file metadata. It could be an invisible pixel-level watermark, the platform's own visual classifier, or history held on the platform side. None of those live in the metadata layer, and cleaning again will not change them.
The full boundaries are in thedisclaimer; if you just want to confirm the file really is clean, use thewatermark check.
Common questions
Is this the same as Instagram?
Largely, yes — same Meta system.
Does every carousel frame need cleaning?
Yes, each one is a separate file.
Does cleaning change the image?
No, only the file header changes.
