X image metadata and its aggressive compression
X compresses aggressively, and much of the metadata does get stripped along the way — at the cost of quality, and on terms that are neither controllable nor guaranteed.

Cleaning options
Want to look first? Themetadata inspectorlists every field in the file, so you can see exactly what is there before deciding what to strip.
Aggressive compression wipes most metadata, but costs visible quality
The same image in different slots — feed, story, cover — may be three separate files, and each one has to be handled.
What the platform reads
| Entry point | Notes |
|---|---|
| Image upload | Recompressed hard; most metadata discarded |
| Original-quality option | Supported by some clients; metadata may survive |
| GIF / video | Transcoded into the platform's format |
Pre-upload checklist
- 11. Clean it yourself first if quality matters
- 22. Do not rely on platform compression to strip metadata for you
- 33. Use an external link rather than a direct upload when the original matters
- 44. Upload that copy, with no editor or forwarding in between
Common traps
- Assuming platform compression means cleaning, while some clients keep the metadata
- Repeated upload and download cycles degrading quality step by step
If it is still flagged after cleaning
That means the trigger was never in the file metadata. It could be an invisible pixel-level watermark, the platform's own visual classifier, or history held on the platform side. None of those live in the metadata layer, and cleaning again will not change them.
The full boundaries are in thedisclaimer; if you just want to confirm the file really is clean, use thewatermark check.
Common questions
Does X strip metadata automatically?
Most of it is lost to recompression, but that is neither guaranteed nor controllable. Cleaning it yourself is more reliable.
Why did my image get worse?
Platform recompression. Handling it before upload avoids the extra round.
Does original-quality mode keep the metadata?
Some clients do. If the metadata is sensitive, clean it first anyway.
