Remove prompts and metadata from Midjourney images
Midjourney does not write C2PA. It writes XMP and PNG text chunks, and anyone who receives your image can read the full prompt and seed straight out of it.

Cleaning options
Want to look first? Themetadata inspectorlists every field in the file, so you can see exactly what is there before deciding what to strip.
XMP parameters plus PNG text chunks; usually no C2PA
Different export paths can write different things. The reliable approach is to inspect one sample before batch processing.
Where it writes
| Location | Notes |
|---|---|
| PNG download | PNG tEXt / iTXt chunks holding the prompt and seed |
| WebP / JPG download | Generation parameters inside XMP |
| C2PA | Usually not written |
| What is at risk | A competitor can reproduce your prompt and style |
Pre-upload checklist
- 11. The default options are enough here — both XMP and PNG text chunks are removed
- 22. If you need to keep camera EXIF, avoid the full-clean preset
- 33. Inspect once first, to confirm the prompt really is in the file
- 44. Upload that copy, with no editor or forwarding in between
Common traps
- Cleaning XMP but forgetting the PNG text chunks — the prompt usually lives in the latter
- Downloading again from Midjourney writes everything back
If it is still flagged after cleaning
That means the trigger was never in the file metadata. It could be an invisible pixel-level watermark, the platform's own visual classifier, or history held on the platform side. None of those live in the metadata layer, and cleaning again will not change them.
The full boundaries are in thedisclaimer; if you just want to confirm the file really is clean, use thewatermark check.
Common questions
Does Midjourney write C2PA?
Usually not. Its parameters live in XMP and PNG text chunks.
Can the prompt really be read out?
Yes. exiftool, or any viewer that supports XMP, will show it.
Can I reproduce the same image afterwards?
No — the seed is gone. Record the parameters beforehand if you need reproducibility.
Does it affect image quality?
No. PNG text chunks and pixel data are completely independent.
