Cleaning C2PA from Photoshop Generative Fill

This is the textbook false positive: the photo is entirely real, one passer-by was removed with Generative Fill, and C2PA came along on export — so the platform labels it AI.

A local AI edit puts C2PA on the whole file; platforms do not weigh the degree

Different export paths can write different things. The reliable approach is to inspect one sample before batch processing.

Where it writes

LocationNotes
C2PAGenerative Fill writes a local-edit signature
XMPPhotoshop software fields and history
EXIF SoftwareStrings such as “Adobe Photoshop 25.0”

Pre-upload checklist

  1. 1
    1. Use the default options — both C2PA and XMP are cleared
  2. 2
    2. Use the AI-only mode if you need to keep the camera settings
  3. 3
    3. Verify again before posting
  4. 4
    4. Upload that copy, with no editor or forwarding in between

Common traps

  • Saving once more in Photoshop after cleaning, which writes the markers back
  • Clearing XMP and forgetting C2PA

If it is still flagged after cleaning

That means the trigger was never in the file metadata. It could be an invisible pixel-level watermark, the platform's own visual classifier, or history held on the platform side. None of those live in the metadata layer, and cleaning again will not change them.

The full boundaries are in thedisclaimer; if you just want to confirm the file really is clean, use thewatermark check.

Common questions

Does one small change count as AI generation?
Platforms generally do not weigh the degree: if the file carries C2PA, it can be labelled.
Are the camera settings still there after cleaning?
By default they are removed too. Use the AI-only mode to keep them.
Is this deceptive?
That is a judgement for you to make. The photo itself is real; it simply carried a signature from a local AI edit. Follow the disclosure rules that apply where you are.
