Clean metadata from ChatGPT-generated images
ChatGPT image generation shares its underpinnings with DALL·E, and exports often carry a C2PA manifest. A social platform reads it and labels the post.

Cleaning options
Want to look first? Themetadata inspectorlists every field in the file, so you can see exactly what is there before deciding what to strip.
Mostly C2PA; the result depends on the export path
Different export paths can write different things. The reliable approach is to inspect one sample before batch processing.
Where it writes
| Location | Notes |
|---|---|
| Downloaded image | C2PA manifest |
| Copy and paste | Metadata may be lost, but the image may also be re-encoded |
| Mobile save | Depends on the client version |
Pre-upload checklist
- 11. Inspect the original downloaded file once
- 22. Clean C2PA and XMP
- 33. Do not substitute a screenshot — that costs quality
- 44. Upload that copy, with no editor or forwarding in between
Common traps
- A screenshot does remove the metadata, but visibly degrades the image
- Different clients save through different paths, with different metadata results
If it is still flagged after cleaning
That means the trigger was never in the file metadata. It could be an invisible pixel-level watermark, the platform's own visual classifier, or history held on the platform side. None of those live in the metadata layer, and cleaning again will not change them.
The full boundaries are in thedisclaimer; if you just want to confirm the file really is clean, use thewatermark check.
Common questions
Isn't a screenshot simpler?
It is, but it recompresses the pixels. A cleaning tool gets the same result without touching quality.
Does a copy-pasted image have metadata?
It may have none, or it may have been re-encoded. Confirm with the inspector.
Does it affect image quality?
Cleaning does not.
