Cleaning C2PA and IPTC from Adobe Firefly
Firefly is one of the most eager tools when it comes to provenance: a C2PA signature plus IPTC attribution fields — the same claim recorded twice.

C2PA signature plus IPTC AI attribution fields
Different export paths can write different things. The reliable approach is to inspect one sample before batch processing.
Where it writes
| Location | Notes |
|---|---|
| C2PA | The signed manifest in APP11 / caBX |
| IPTC | Attribution fields in APP13 |
| XMP | May still name the Firefly tool |
Pre-upload checklist
- 11. Clean both C2PA and IPTC — both are on by default
- 22. Check whether the tool name survives anywhere in XMP
- 33. Verify again once the cleaning is done
- 44. Upload that copy, with no editor or forwarding in between
Common traps
- Clearing C2PA while the attribution in IPTC stays put
- Saving once more in another Adobe tool, which writes it back
If it is still flagged after cleaning
That means the trigger was never in the file metadata. It could be an invisible pixel-level watermark, the platform's own visual classifier, or history held on the platform side. None of those live in the metadata layer, and cleaning again will not change them.
The full boundaries are in thedisclaimer; if you just want to confirm the file really is clean, use thewatermark check.
Common questions
What exactly is in IPTC?
Publishing-related credit and attribution fields; Firefly marks the AI-generated property there.
Is clearing C2PA enough?
No. IPTC can be read by platforms or buyers just as well.
Does it affect how the image displays?
No.
