Discord attachments and metadata retention
Discord keeps attachments as original files and does no metadata processing. Posting to a channel hands the full EXIF and location to everyone in that channel.

Cleaning options
Want to look first? Themetadata inspectorlists every field in the file, so you can see exactly what is there before deciding what to strip.
Attachments stored as-is; metadata persists
The same image in different slots — feed, story, cover — may be three separate files, and each one has to be handled.
What the platform reads
| Entry point | Notes |
|---|---|
| Attachment | Stored as the original file, metadata intact |
| Image preview | A thumbnail may be generated, but the original stays |
| CDN link | Anyone holding the link can download the original |
Pre-upload checklist
- 11. Clean before posting
- 22. CDN links get forwarded, which makes them effectively public
- 33. For sensitive files, consider an encrypted archive
- 44. Upload that copy, with no editor or forwarding in between
Common traps
- Assuming a small private channel is safe
- A forwarded link cannot be taken back
If it is still flagged after cleaning
That means the trigger was never in the file metadata. It could be an invisible pixel-level watermark, the platform's own visual classifier, or history held on the platform side. None of those live in the metadata layer, and cleaning again will not change them.
The full boundaries are in thedisclaimer; if you just want to confirm the file really is clean, use thewatermark check.
Common questions
Does Discord clean metadata?
No. Attachments are stored exactly as they are.
Is the metadata still there after I delete the message?
The attachment usually becomes inaccessible, but copies others already downloaded are unaffected.
Is there a way to prevent it entirely?
Clean before uploading, or use an encrypted archive and send the password separately.
