What is GitMCP?

The problem GitMCP solves is very specific: AI assistants often "remember incorrectly" when answering code questions because they read old versions from training data. Its approach is to replace `github.com` in the repository address with `gitmcp.io` to instantly generate a remote MCP service for any public repository. Once connected, AI tools can read files like the repository's README and llms.txt on demand, with answers based on the current code rather than impressions from memory. It requires almost no learning cost: if you can modify a URL, you can use it.

Who is it for?

  • Developers who write code with Cursor or Claude and need their assistants to understand the actual usage of a certain open-source library.
  • Technical document maintainers who want AI responses to be based on the latest documentation rather than blog posts written by others years ago.
  • Architects evaluating third-party SDKs: Ask the assistant to read the source code and README first before drawing conclusions.
  • People who do technical sharing and teaching connect sample repositories into AI tools for live demonstrations.
  • For engineers who have just taken over an unfamiliar project, use it to clarify the repository's conventions first before getting started.

Key features

6
1

Create a service in one second

Replace the domain name in the repository address to get the MCP address. No deployment, no configuration, no key application required. You can connect it to your own assistant in a few minutes.

2

Read repository documents

The official states that it will read files such as llms.txt, llms-full.txt, readme.md, etc., feed the project description to the model, and the answers will include the project's own conventions and writing styles.

3

Supports GitHub Pages

Replace `username.github.io/repo` with `username.gitmcp.io/repo` to connect documentation sites as well, making it suitable for projects that only publish documentation externally.

4

Wide coverage

The official states that it works for any public GitHub repository. AI tools can access both public documents and code, and a new address is generated for each repository.

5

Tool Compatibility

The official list includes Claude, Cursor, Windsurf, VSCode, Cline, Highlight AI, Augment Code, Msty AI, and more, covering almost all mainstream editors.

6

In-page Testing

The page provides two entry points, To MCP and To Chat, allowing you to ask a question on the webpage first before deciding whether to integrate it, with no local processes to maintain.

How to use GitMCP

  • Prioritize repositories with complete llms.txt.
  • the official also retrieves context from these files, and the more standardized the documentation, the better the results.
  • Private repositories are not covered, so don't expect it to handle internal code.
  • After connecting, first ask "How to use the interface of this version?" to verify that it is reading the current version.
  • The generated answers still need to be verified against the source code.
  • version numbers, parameter names, and deprecation notes are the most error-prone aspects.
  • The service is hosted by a third party, and repository content will be forwarded through it.
  • Evaluate sensitive projects before connecting them.
  • save frequently used addresses in team documents so new colleagues can copy them directly.
