Mastra
An AI agent framework in the TypeScript ecosystem that bundles workflows, memory, tools, and observability into a single set of APIs. Its coding style is very friendly to front-end engineers. It is suitable for those who need to run agents in a production environment for a long time.

What is Mastra?
If your team writes TypeScript, you donโt have to build agents from scratch. Mastra is an Agent framework for this language, breaking down agents, workflows, memory, and observability into individually accessible modules. The official website examples only require a few imports and a short configuration. The following module names are basically its feature list.
Who is it for?
- Backend teams with TypeScript engineering experience who want to directly integrate agents into their existing services
- Business scenarios that require long processes and deterministic orchestration and do not want to rely entirely on model free-form generation
- Teams already building agents but lacking support for tracking, evaluation, and datasets
- Developers who want to use quantitative evaluations to answer questions such as whether tools were selected correctly and whether user instructions were ignored
Key features
6Agents
An agent is the basic unit. You only need to configure the ID, instructions, model and tools, and the model can be replaced with different vendors.
Workflows
Assemble deterministic workflows using step functions, support input schemas, and chain them via `then` for submission and execution.
Harness
A long-running controller called AgentController that can be hooked up to a storage layer and various running modes.
Memory
Provides the agent with cross-turn memory capabilities, eliminating the need to repeat the context each time.
Server and Factory
Expose agents as external services, as well as batch-produce necessary supporting components.
Full Observability Suite
Traces, Metrics, Logs, Evals, Experiments, Scorers, and Datasets are all included in one set. Official documentation examples show the time taken per round and snippets of tool calls.
How to use Mastra
- First, run the Quickstart to get the minimal agent up and running before adding tools.
- the official examples start with importing the Agent itself, so following them is the easiest way.
- Enable observability early: The sooner you integrate Traces and Scorers, the easier it will be to troubleshoot why the wrong tools were selected later on.
- Use Datasets in conjunction with Scorers to perform regression testing.
- The official evaluation examples cover dimensions such as tool selection, instruction adherence, and HITL, and you can create your own checklist by following them.
- The official FAQ states that it supports multiple models and vendors.
- Before switching models, confirm the costs and context limits, and don't switch just based on the names.
- The GitHub star count marked on the official website is over 28,000.
- The project is active but its API is still evolving, so it's safer to lock the version before upgrading.
