What is Kaggle?

Kaggle is a data science and AI community platform under Google. In recent years, it has expanded its positioning from a "machine learning competition community" to "The World's AI Proving Ground", integrating competitions, public datasets, cloud-based Notebooks, pre-trained models, free courses and benchmark tests into a single workspace. According to its official website, the community has more than 31 million developers, researchers and lab members, covering a wide range of people from beginner students to corporate research teams such as IBM Research and Google DeepMind. Unlike platforms that only offer a single function (such as simply hosting datasets or organizing competitions), Kaggle creates a complete workflow of "learning - practicing - competing - publishing", allowing users to complete the entire process of a data science project without leaving the platform.

Who is it for?

  • Students and career changers who want to start their journey in data science and machine learning from scratch can first use the Kaggle Learn courses to build a solid foundation.
  • Engineers and researchers who want to climb the leaderboards in algorithm competitions and build a portfolio for display.
  • Data scientists who need ready-to-use public datasets for research prototyping, teaching, or modeling.
  • Researchers and institutional laboratories who want to publish and maintain rigorous AI benchmarks.
  • Enterprise organizers who wish to solicit AI solutions from the broader community by hosting competitions.

Key features

6
1

Competitions & Hackathons

The sponsor provides datasets, sets evaluation metrics and prizes; participants submit predictions and are scored on a real-time leaderboard. The official website lists various competition formats ranging from entry-level challenges (e.g., Titanic) to high-stakes frontier challenges (e.g., ARC Prize), and organizers can also host public or private competitions on their own.

2

Public Datasets

The official website shows that there are more than 700,000 public datasets covering fields such as finance, computer vision, sports, and government statistics. Each dataset comes with version control, availability scores and supporting Notebook examples, eliminating the trouble of crawling and cleaning data by yourself.

3

Reproducible Notebooks

A cloud-based Notebook environment within a browser, pre-installed with Python/R and commonly used scientific computing libraries, providing CPU and free GPU/TPU computing power (with weekly quotas). Currently, it has accumulated approximately 1.7 million public Notebooks, which are publicly available, reproducible, and votable.

4

Kaggle Learn Free Courses

A set of short, interactive free courses with supporting Notebook exercises, covering topics such as Python, SQL, machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, NLP, time series, and AI ethics. Completion leads to a certificate of completion.

5

Kaggle Models Model Library

A hosting center for pre-trained models, which includes open-weight models such as Google Gemma and Meta Llama as well as a large number of weights uploaded by the community, and can be directly loaded and deployed within Notebooks.

6

Benchmarks

An LLM/generative AI evaluation system based on open-source SDKs. Researchers can freely create and run custom evaluations and maintain public leaderboards. Benchmarks contributed by IBM Research, Google (FACTS suite), and others are already available on the platform.

How to use Kaggle

  • For beginners, it is recommended to first take the short Python and machine learning courses on Kaggle Learn, then fork a public introductory competition (such as Titanic) to practice hands-on.
  • This is much faster than directly reading the documentation to get started.
  • When using Notebooks, note that the weekly GPU/TPU quota is limited.
  • First, run through the process with a small dataset before using large models, and don't exhaust your computing power right away.
  • When looking for data, prioritize using the ready-made datasets in Datasets and pay attention to their respective licenses.
  • Before using datasets at a commercial scale, be sure to confirm the authorization scope.
  • When participating in a competition, understand the splitting rules of the public leaderboard and the private leaderboard, and the final ranking will be based on the private leaderboard.
  • The platform's quotas, competition rules and functions will be adjusted with version updates.
  • Before participating in a competition or using it for commercial purposes, it is recommended to check the official website's current page instructions again.
