What is ModelScope?
ModelScope, initiated by Alibaba DAMO Academy, is an open-source model community with the slogan "Sharing, Co-creation, Progress". It aims to build a continuously innovative AI open-source ecosystem, as officially stated. The platform aggregates the latest and most popular models, datasets, and co-space applications in the industry, and provides model services and computing power platforms. Domestic mainstream open-source models (such as series like DeepSeek, Tongyi Qianwen, GLM, MiniCPM, etc.) are updated in a timely manner on the platform. It is an important model hosting and experience entry for the Chinese AI ecosystem, and it is especially worth checking out first when selecting domestic models. For developers, most steps in the process from viewing models, running demos, to fine-tuning and deployment can be completed within the platform.
Who is it for?
- Developers and algorithm engineers in China who are engaged in model selection, fine-tuning and deployment, teams that need Chinese models and datasets, as well as researchers who want to experience the latest open-source models at zero cost and keep up with the progress of domestic open-source; it is also commonly used by college teachers and students for curriculum design and graduation projects.
Key features
7Model Library
Search for models by task categories (Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing, Speech, Multimodal, Scientific Computing), covering a wide range of tasks such as detection, segmentation, OCR, translation, speech recognition, text-to-image/video, and protein structure prediction. The task labels are clear and retrieval is convenient.
Dataset Library
Provides download and retrieval of public datasets, with some accompanied by evaluation benchmarks to facilitate research and reproduction, eliminating the trouble of searching for data everywhere.
Creation Space
Experience model application demos directly in the browser without a local environment. Run through them first to decide whether to integrate them, and there are a considerable number of applications contributed by the community.
Developer Practices and Community
Provides tutorials, practical projects, and community exchanges to facilitate quick onboarding and offer reference paths for newbies.
Intelligent Workshop & Experiment Field
An official entry point for model experimentation and tuning, paired with cloud computing power to run fine-tuning and deployment, reducing the cost of building a self-built environment.
AIGC Section
It centrally showcases generative AI models and applications such as text, image, and video, allowing for quick comparison of generative-related needs.
Online Computing Power and Model Services
Provides cloud-based computing power to support inference, fine-tuning and deployment, with elastic usage and pay-as-you-go pricing, lowering the entry threshold.
How to use ModelScope
- Before downloading a model, check the license and commercial restrictions carefully, especially whether enterprise use is restricted.
- if you want to perform fine-tuning or deployment, first refer to the hands-on testing configurations in community Notebooks and creative spaces.
- Prioritize Notebooks maintained by the official or community as a starting point, which can save a lot of time spent on troubleshooting environment issues.
- When comparing models, focus on download volume and recent updates to judge their popularity and maintenance status.
